Diploma in Artwank

1 year part time

Description: Go see some exhibitions, read some art magazines, flick through some glossy art publications. Photocopy and/or photograph and highlight any examples of overblown, pointless, dishonest, artwank prose. The stuff that rubs you up the wrong way.

Entry Requirements: A perceptive eye, a discerning ear (fine tooth comb optional)

Application Process: Completion of the enrollment form

Assessment Process: Submit to your tutor for consideration: Bob Milner (Course Leader), Studio A6, Westgate Studio, 55 Westgate, WAKEFIELD, WF1 1BW, UK. It will be graded accordingly. Students who pass the course will receive a diploma and a unique and very limited artwank badge. The information supplied will be added to a continuously expanding paper volume and website dedicated to unmasking the spurious and deceitful purveyors of artwank.

Course Leader: Bob Milner

Fee: None

BA (Hons) Avant Garde

1 year part time

Description: 1 year self-directed, part-time course available via distance-learning. A varied programme of study which develops incidental knowledge at the highest level. Taking the basic interpretation of Avant-Garde to mean:  unconventional, innovative, you are expected to record and reflect upon human acts of ingenuity in the adaptation of every day objects for new use as you happen upon them. i.e. A brick used as a door stop, folded beer mat used to stead a wobbly table or the use of toothpaste to patch missing Artex (I confess to having done the latter myself). The course aims to develop awareness of these frequently overlooked interventions and increase, maybe even inform your own practice. As part of the enrollment process students will be expected to select an elective from the following:

  • Metal Work
  • String Theory
  • Clip Art

Electives can be completed at any time during the course and you are free to collaborate with fellow Avant-Garde colleagues if you so wish. Elective work is to be submitted to your course tutor via photographic documentation. All students MUST complete an elective.

Entry Requirements: Students must have a valid email account and a keen eye

Application Process: Completion of the enrolment form and selection of your elective where you will receive materials and instruction.

Assessment Process:  Students are required to evidence Incidental Knowledge in a digital format at least 3 times each term, with the source cited, to be published on the University website.

Course Leader: Debi Holbrook

Fee: None although offerings of wine will be looked upon favourably.

BA (Hons) Comedy

1 year part time

Description: 1 year self-directed, part-time course available via distance-learning. A varied programme of study which develops incidental knowledge at the highest level.

Unlike other courses, the title doesn’t refer to the subject to be studied, but the means of acquiring incidental knowledge. All information must be collected from comedy in any format, including live stand up, panel shows, sitcoms, CD recordings, etc. Knowledge submitted can be on any subject.

Students can choose to collate knowledge on particular themes or produce extended written works for extra credits.

Entry Requirements: Students must have a valid email account.

Application Process: Completion of the enrollment form.

Assessment Process: Students are required to evidence Incidental Knowledge in a digital format at least 3 times each term, with the source cited, to be published on the University website. Evidence may be provided in the form of text, drawing, photographs or any other appropriate format.

Course Leader: Louise Atkinson

BA (Hons) Cut ‘n’ Paste

1 year part time

Description: I want you to work. Only through the application of thought and the process of creation can you absorb the essential information on the sly, incidentally and accidentally, that will be a crucial part of your education. There is a very simple course structure. Make collages whilst either listening to the radio or to the television. There is an opportunity for ‘en plein air’ collage making for those fully committed to the process; the incidental knowledge acquired via this route however can be much slower and a little parochial. The subject matter for the collages is self directed. I would recommend a diverse use of materials and do not be afraid to include the use of pencil and/or paint in your work; be creative! Innovate! And above all else, pick up the knowledge; you will need this.

Entry Requirements: Ability to multi-task.

Application Process: Completion of the enrollment form

Assessment Process:  You are required to send all collages and supporting evidence to the course leader: Bob Milner (Course Leader), Studio A6, Westgate Studio, 55 Westgate, WAKEFIELD, WF1 1BW, UK. It may be exhibited. It may be included in a publication. This is not a beauty contest; it is about the gathering of new incidental knowledge. Remember that and you’ll go far.

BA (Hons) Film

1 year part time

Description: This course is a immense opportunity for you to incidentally increase your incidental film knowledge through increments initiated at your own pace. Initially you will decide upon your own learning curve and either expand it, or not. However (and this is really important!) should you not incorporate enough incidental film knowledge about your chosen subject you will not gain your diploma/degree. The structure of this course is self-directed, self-dictated, self-actualising and self-fulfilling, but works on the understanding that you will increase your incidental film knowledge without consciously aiming to do so. This will happen unintentionally, from and within the school of living. You will be able to use any source, anywhere and anytime in the world. Something that you pick up from your Grandma can be added as incidental film knowledge, but you must quote her and the reliable providers of information and evidence, that you have referenced, in order to confirm that the information that she has imparted you with is actually accurate. This therefore will require a bibliography. An example would be; I was watching The Duchess on BBC 2, (21.00-23.00) Thursday 25/08/11, when my son pointed out that the Male Protagonist Ralph Fiennes also played Voldamort in Harry Potter. I then inputted this information into Google and came up with the information on www.imdb.com/name/nm0000146

Entry Requirements: Students must have a valid email account.

Application Process: Completion of the enrollment form

Assessment Process:  All information will be graded on a points system and that will be, 1 point for finding out the information and establish that the information is correct.  An additional point will be awarded if the information given to the course tutor was knowledge that the course leader did not already have in their position and has themselves learned something new without intending to do so. If you would like a first then you will also create a blog (with pretty pictures!) that will be used in place of a dissertation. To Gain your BA you will have to achieve between 20 to 30 points (units) and to obtain a first they you will also have fully completed and submitted a blog over the duration of the course.

BA (Hons) Foreign Language

1 year part time

Description: 1 year self-directed, part-time course available via distance-learning. A varied programme of study which develops foreign language incidental knowledge at the highest level. Incidental Foreign Language is acquired not necessarily abroad but perhaps on imported consumer items such as rum bottles, electronic goods user guides and subtitled films. Foreign visitors and tourists may also provide excellent incidental foreign language. Incidental Foreign Language can be in any language each student does not know fluently. Students are required to provide a form of translation to evidence knowledge.

Entry Requirements: Students must have a valid email account.

Application Process: Completion of the enrollment form

Assessment Process: Students are required to evidence incidentally learnt foreign language in a digital format at least 3 times each term, with a translation, to be published on the University website. Evidence may be provided in the form of text, image, audio or film or any other appropriate format.

Course Leader: Fundada

MPhil Mistakes

1 year part time

Description: MPhil Mistakes is a course geared towards the incidental knowledge gained through the process of erring, and maximising blunders within creative practice.

Entry Requirements: Between zero and three legs.

Application Process: Drop us a line. (Do the form)

Assessment Process: Email or postal submission of works, constant liaison with course leaders and endless discussion. Note that if this is not completed it will be considered a mistake, and ultimately the highest echelon of course understanding.

Course Leader: Sparrow+Castice

Fee: None

NVQ Pedantics

1 year part time

(Let me begin  by saying this; diplomas are fine, a framed NVQ certificate looks just as good on the wall as any degree certificate so don’t be put off by what your more intelligent friends may say.)

Description: What’s wrong with people these days? They have opinions coming out of their arses and what should be coming out of their arses is, instead, coming out of their mouths. Catalogue it, challenge it, draw a picture of it, I really don’t care. Clear? NO? Ok try this, for a variety of reasons people say stupid things, right? Listen out for them; they are your raw material, a sort of INCIDENTAL LACK OF KNOWLEDGE if you will. Find it, learn from it, share it, work with it.

EXAMPLE [from a pub quiz]
Q.  What sea can be found to the North of Turkey?
A. I know this, it’s Chechnya…. I mean FFS!

Good places to begin your research include:

  • Pub quiz’s (obviously) especially when then question masters can’t read out the questions properly (dyslexia is no excuse).
  • Prime Minister’s Question (the PM is a ‘given’, it is the attention seeking nob-heads who ask the questions I’m thinking of).
  • The Jeremy Vine show. If you don’t listen to Radio 2 try the Daily Mail instead.
  • Old People.
  • Young People.

Clear? NO? ok try this, for a variety of reasons people say stupid things right? Listen out for them; they are your raw material, a sort of INCIDENTAL LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. Find it
The course will include the following modules
Incidental Knowledge in Post-Industrial England.
MODULE ONE:
‘Freecycle’: acquisition and the usage and abusage of the English language
MODULE ONE
Obfuscation and ignorance; obstructions and impediments to the acquisition of incidental knowledge.
That should help get you started so bugger off and do some work. E-mail me your work . Please do not forward YOUR RESEARCH BY E#MAIL

Entry Requirements: A cheerful personality. Email course tutor for further details.

Application Process: Pedantry chooses us. We do not choose it. We do not choose Pedantry, it chooses us, (but complete the enrollment form just to be sure).

Assessment Process: A team based discussion… Peer assessed reviewed evaluated nitpicking! (1)

Progression: Many who complete this course may want to follow an academic path at under-graduate or post-graduate level. This will be unnecessary as, upon satisfactory completion of the course, it may be possible to immediately convert your Diploma into a First Class honours or Masters degree, or even a Doctorate (cash and correction fluid are wonderful things, see course leader for further details).

Should you instead wish to use your new qualification to pursue a career we strongly recommend Politics or working in a call centre.

Course Leader: Duncan Lister

Fees: None… but if you want to buy me a pint…
(1) No, ‘nitpicking’ should not be hyphenated! (2)
(2) Yes, the use of an exclamation mark is unnecessary.

  1. Wow ! At last some courses which I can use up my wealth of incidental knowledge accumulated before during and after my fine art degree course !!! Imagine the superfluous letters of qualification I could accumulate and have my employers toffing their hats and bowing to my splended status, and offering me stupendously large amounts of money to stay in their employ. My only problem is which one to choose first! Would a combo be possible in view of my advancing years? I cant wait… Havent been so inspired since my expedition for the 3 mountains 1997!
Count me in. Regards – Angela

  2. I think I should probably start with the NVQ as a lot of this stuff is way beyond me. Although I might be eligible to start on the actual diploma?

  3. Im excited where do I sign up. I reckon they all sound like great courses, especially since all i need is an email account and some correction fluid.

Oh exciting! I’d like to propose combining elements of Cut and Paste(with accompanying acquisition of incidental knowledge and gluey mess) with foreign language! a collage comprising incidentally acquired words and phrases on packaging and the like from holiday in Wales put together whilst absorbing incidental knowledge from the TV,paint and glue in equal measure – multitasking indeed. Please may I enroll for combined studies?
